Area converter

...

Area uses squared units. International feet and acres, not U.S. survey units. Decimals: 12.5 or 12,5, without thousands separators.

How to convert area

Choose the unit you have, enter the area and choose the unit you need. The result updates as you type.

One common reference unit

Each unit has an exact factor in square metres. Multiply by the source factor and divide by the target factor.

Target area = Input × Source factor ÷ Target factor

  1. Choose the source unit.
  2. Enter the area, not just a side length.
  3. Choose the target unit and copy the result.

1 hectare = 10,000 m². Therefore, 2.5 hectares = 25,000 m².

Square units change by the square of the length factor

Area has two dimensions. A length factor must be squared when converting an area.

1 m² = 100 × 100 cm² = 10,000 cm²

  1. Convert each side to the same unit.
  2. Multiply the side lengths to find the area if necessary.
  3. Convert the resulting area.

A 5 m by 4 m room has an area of 20 m², not 20 m.

Acres, precision and signed values

The acre here is based on the international foot. Historical U.S. survey areas and variable local land units are not included.

1 acre = 43,560 ft² = 4,046.8564224 m²

  1. Check that the unit matches the measurement record.
  2. Set maximum decimal places with the slider.
  3. A signed value can describe an area difference; ≈ means the display is rounded.

1 hectare is approximately 2.471054 international acres at six decimal places.
