How to calculate a discount

A discount reduces the original price by a percentage. Enter the price of one item and the discount rate. The calculator shows the total to pay and the saving; change Quantity under Options if you are buying more than one.

Find the sale price

A percentage is a share out of 100. Start with the original price, calculate that share, then subtract it.

Saving = Original price × Discount ÷ 100

  1. Multiply the price by the discount percentage.
  2. Divide by 100 to find the saving.
  3. Subtract the saving from the original price.

An item priced at 80 with 25% off: 80 × 25 ÷ 100 = 20 saved. You pay 80 − 20 = 60.

Buying several identical items

Quantity applies the same price and discount to every item. The total before discount is the price per item multiplied by the number of items.

Total before discount = Price per item × Quantity

  1. Open Options and enter a whole-number quantity.
  2. Calculate the discount on the combined original total.
  3. Subtract that saving to find the total to pay.

Three items at 40 each with 15% off: the original total is 120, the saving is 18 and you pay 102.

Rounding and limits

The combined original total is rounded to two decimal places. The discount amount is then rounded to two decimal places and subtracted from that total. Half-cent ties round up for these nonnegative amounts.

Total to pay = Rounded original total − Rounded saving

  1. Use a discount between 0% and 100%; 0% leaves the price unchanged.
  2. A 100% discount makes the item total zero.
  3. Use one currency throughout. Taxes, delivery and extra charges are not added.

At 7.99 with 12.5% off, the saving is 1.00 after rounding and you pay 6.99. A shop may use different rounding rules.
