Tip calculator
Use one currency. Decimals: 12.5 or 12,5, without thousands separators. Amounts are rounded to two decimal places.
How to calculate a tip and split a bill
Enter the bill amount, the tip percentage you choose and the number of people sharing it. The calculator adds the tip and shows the maximum share per person. If the cents do not divide evenly, it also shows how to split the exact total.
Work out the tip
The percentage applies to the bill amount you enter. There is no preset tipping rule: use the amount and rate appropriate for your situation.
Tip = Bill amount × Tip percentage ÷ 100
- Enter the amount on which you want to calculate the tip.
- Choose a percentage, including zero if no tip is needed.
- Add the tip to the bill to find the total.
For a bill of 80 and a tip of 15%, the tip is 12.00 and the total is 92.00.
Split the total without losing a cent
Dividing a bill can produce fractions of a cent. The per-person figure is the higher share, rounded up to the next cent when necessary. The exact split gives some people one cent less so the shares add up correctly.
Average share = Total with tip ÷ People
- Enter a positive whole number of people.
- Divide the total by that number.
- If cents remain, give that many people one extra cent and use the lower share for everyone else.
A bill of 100 with a 15% tip totals 115.00. For three people, one pays 38.34 and two pay 38.33: exactly 115.00.
Amounts, rounding and what is included
The entered bill is rounded to two decimal places first. The tip is calculated from that rounded bill and rounded to two decimal places. These two amounts are added before splitting. Half-cent ties round up for nonnegative amounts.
Total = Rounded bill + Rounded tip
- Use one currency and enter decimals without thousands separators.
- Service charges and taxes are included only if you put them in the bill amount.
- If a service charge is already included, consider it before choosing an additional tip.
A bill of 0.01 split three ways with no tip gives one share of 0.01 and two shares of 0.00. The calculator does not invent extra cents.
