Volume converter

...

US liquid and imperial units differ. Cups are explicitly US or 250 mL metric. Decimals: 12.5 or 12,5, without thousands separators.

How to convert volume

Choose the exact unit used by your measurement or recipe. US liquid, imperial and cup definitions are shown separately.

Convert through litres

Each unit has a fixed factor in litres. Multiply by the source factor, then divide by the target factor.

Target volume = Input × Source factor ÷ Target factor

  1. Choose the source unit.
  2. Enter the volume and choose the target unit.
  3. Adjust the decimal slider and copy the answer.

1 litre = 1,000 millilitres. Therefore, 2.5 litres = 2,500 millilitres.

US and imperial are different

A US liquid gallon is exactly 231 cubic international inches. An imperial gallon is exactly 4.54609 litres. Fluid ounces also differ.

1 US gal = 3.785411784 L; 1 imp gal = 4.54609 L

  1. Check whether the original measurement is US or imperial.
  2. Select a liquid unit, not a dry gallon or a weight ounce.
  3. Keep the selected definition when reversing a conversion.

1 US fluid ounce = 29.5735295625 mL; 1 imperial fluid ounce = 28.4130625 mL.

Cups, cubic units and precision

The US customary cup is 236.5882365 mL; the metric cup is 250 mL. A 240 mL nutrition-label cup and other regional cups are not included.

1 m³ = 1,000 L; 1 cm³ = 1 mL

  1. Check the cup definition used by the recipe.
  2. For a rectangular container, multiply the three dimensions in the same unit first.
  3. The ≈ sign marks rounding; signed values can describe a volume difference.

Four metric cups contain 1 litre. Four US customary cups contain 946.352946 mL.
